In addition to food and beverages, the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) also recorded an increase in the price of cigarettes and tobacco domestically.
The consumer price index (CPI) for the cigarette and tobacco sub-group in Cilacap Regency increased to 133.34 in March 2022. This means that inflation in the cigarette and tobacco group recorded inflation of 5.34% compared to the previous month (month to month/m-to-m).
Compared to the end of last year, inflation for cigarettes and tobacco in Cilacap was 8.28% (year to date/ytd). Similarly, compared to March 2021, the inflation rate for cigarettes and tobacco in the city was 17.04% (year on year/yoy). Annually, Cilacap's cigarette and tobacco inflation was the highest compared to the 89 cities surveyed by BPS.
The next highest city/regency with cigarette and tobacco inflation was Bau-Bau City, at 12.04% (yoy). Followed by Batam City at 11.33% (yoy), Mataram City at 9.44% (yoy), and Pangkal Pinang City at 9.38% (yoy).
Following these were Cilegon City with cigarette and tobacco inflation of 9.24% (yoy); Bogor City at 9.21% (yoy); Jambi City at 9.15% (yoy); and Sumenep and Padang City at 9.06% (yoy) and 9.03% (yoy) respectively.
The average national inflation for the cigarette and tobacco sub-group was recorded at 1.22% (ytd) and 6.36% (yoy).
For some Indonesian people, the habit of smoking or chewing betel nut using tobacco as a raw material is a basic need. With the increase in cigarette excise duty almost every year, the price of cigarettes will also continue to soar.
