This week's Covid-19 statistics in Asia show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a reversal from the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, 10 countries still recorded an increase in deaths, while 13 others recorded fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Lebanon, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Israel, and Iran (Islamic Republic). The total number of deaths in these five countries as of Monday, January 2, 2023, was 71, with weekly growth exceeding 40 percent.
Lebanon ranks first, with a 200 percent increase in weekly deaths. Worldometer recorded three deaths in the country, up from one the previous week.
Afghanistan follows with a 200 percent weekly increase in deaths. Three deaths were reported in the country. Daily death statistics show a 25% decrease compared to the previous day's four deaths.
Next is Sri Lanka with two deaths (up 100%), Israel with 49 deaths (up 44.12%), and Iran (Islamic Republic) with a 40% increase in deaths.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, Japan recorded the highest number of deaths in Asia over the past seven days, with 2,188 deaths. Death reports in the country increased by 9.07% compared to the previous week. Following Japan, South Korea recorded 429 deaths (up 8.61%), Hong Kong recorded 407 deaths (up 39.86%), Taiwan recorded 174 deaths (down 16.75%), and the Philippines recorded 161 deaths (down 6.4%).
A total of 3,667 deaths were recorded in Asia over the past seven days. This accounts for 38.35 percent of global Covid-19 deaths, totaling 9,562. The number of deaths in Asia increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 3,471 deaths.
