The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) reported that 206 people in Indonesia have been detected with atypical progressive acute kidney injury (AKI), also known as the mysterious kidney failure disease, as of October 18, 2022. Of that number, 99 people, or 48 percent, have died.
These mysterious kidney failure cases have been reported from 20 provinces in Indonesia. The majority of cases occurred in children aged 1-5 years.
"As of October 18th, there are 206 cases reported from 20 provinces, with a mortality rate of 99 cases or 48 percent. The mortality rate at RSCM, the national referral hospital for kidneys, reaches 65 percent," said the Ministry of Health spokesperson, Mohammad Syahril, during an online press conference on Wednesday (October 19th).
Syahril further revealed that the Ministry of Health has instructed pharmacies and health workers in Indonesia to temporarily stop selling or prescribing liquid or syrup-based over-the-counter medications.
"However, from the examination results, there is no evidence linking this AKI to the Covid-19 vaccine," he said.
Syahril urged the public, especially parents, to immediately take their children to the nearest health facility if they experience symptoms of atypical progressive acute kidney injury. One of the most noticeable symptoms is a decrease in the frequency and volume of urination. Additionally, symptoms may also be accompanied by fever and diarrhea, or neither of these symptoms.
"As an alternative, other forms of medication such as tablets and capsules can be used," he explained.
