This week's COVID-19 statistics in Asia still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. Ten countries recorded increased deaths this week, while five others reported deaths, albeit in smaller numbers.
Percentage-wise, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Singapore, Thailand, Afghanistan, Cyprus, and Malaysia. The total deaths in these five countries for the week ending January 15, 2023, amounted to 107, representing a weekly growth exceeding 61.9 percent.
Singapore ranks first, with a 400 percent increase in weekly deaths. Worldometer recorded five deaths in the country, up from one the previous week.
Thailand follows, with a weekly growth in deaths reaching 176.19 percent. The country reported 58 deaths, compared to 21 the previous week.
Rounding out the top five are Afghanistan with two deaths (up 100%), Cyprus with eight deaths (up 100%), and Malaysia with a 61.9% increase in deaths.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, Japan recorded the highest number of deaths in Asia over the past seven days, with 2,849 fatalities. This represents a 32.57% increase compared to the previous week. Following Japan are South Korea with 356 deaths (down 11%), Taiwan with 296 deaths (up 17%), the Philippines with 93 deaths (up 17.72%), and Thailand with 58 deaths (up 176.19%).
Total deaths in Asia over the past seven days reached 3,823. This accounts for 36.75 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, totaling 10,402. The death toll in Asia increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 3,091 deaths.
