United States (US) President Donald Trump accused the World Health Organization (WHO) of being under Chinese control. He reiterated this statement at the end of May, claiming the WHO failed to help the US combat the Covid-19 pandemic. The US subsequently decided to withdraw from WHO membership, which officially took effect on July 6, 2021, as reported by the BBC.
196 countries pay annual contributions to the WHO. The US was the largest contributor. In 2020, the US paid US$115.8 million, or Rp 1.7 trillion at an exchange rate of Rp 14,400 per US$.
Besides the US, China was the second-largest contributor. China, a frequent adversary of the US, contributed US$57.4 million in 2020, equivalent to Rp 826.6 billion. Meanwhile, Indonesia was not among the top 10 largest donors to the WHO, contributing only US$2.6 million, or Rp 37.4 billion.
