According to a report from the Indonesian Covid-19 Task Force, as of April 7, 2022, there were 155,509 Covid-19 deaths in Indonesia.
The most common comorbidity found in these deaths was diabetes mellitus.
"Patients with this comorbidity contributed to the high Covid-19 death toll," explained the Government Spokesperson for Covid-19 Handling, Prof. Wiku Adisasmito, in a press statement on Wednesday (March 23).
Of the 6,203 Covid-19 deaths sampled, 9.4% had diabetes mellitus as a comorbidity. Hypertension was also prevalent, with a percentage of 9.2%.
Furthermore, 4.8% of the samples had heart disease, 2% kidney disease, 1.2% chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cancer and immune disorders each at 0.5%.
Other comorbidities found in Covid-19 deaths included other respiratory disorders, pregnancy, Tuberculosis (TB), asthma, and liver disease, each with a percentage below 0.5%.
Wiku emphasized that the public needs to protect vulnerable groups from Covid-19 infection, especially the elderly and those with comorbidities, by implementing health protocols, vaccination, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
