This week's Covid-19 statistics in the Americas show a decrease in the death toll in most countries, a reversal from the previous trend of continuous increases. This week, four countries recorded an increase in deaths, while 11 others reported fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths were Ecuador, Canada, Peru, Argentina, and Colombia. The total deaths in these five countries for the week of October 16, 2022, amounted to 473, with a weekly growth rate above 0 percent.
Ecuador ranked first, with a 300 percent increase in weekly deaths. Worldometer recorded four deaths in the country, up from one the previous week.
Next was Canada, which recorded a 95.36 percent increase in deaths compared to the previous week. The number of deaths was 295, up from 151 the previous week. Peru reported 155 deaths (up 27.05%), Argentina saw a 20% increase in deaths, and Colombia reported 13 deaths (unchanged from the previous week).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest seven-day death toll in the Americas was in the United States, with 1,783 deaths. This represents an 11.86% decrease compared to the previous week. Following the US, Brazil recorded 337 deaths (down 42.98%), Canada 295 (up 95.36%), Peru 155 (up 27.05%), and Chile 107 (down 16.41%).
The total number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was 2,786. This accounts for 31.37 percent of global Covid-19 deaths, which totaled 8,882. The number of deaths in the Americas decreased compared to the previous seven-day period, which saw 3,193 deaths.
