This week's Covid-19 statistics in Asia still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. Six countries recorded increased deaths this week, while five others saw a decrease in the number of deaths.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths were India, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Indonesia, and the Philippines. A total of 115 deaths were recorded in these five countries as of Saturday, March 18, 2023, representing a weekly growth of over five percent.
India ranked first, with a 200 percent increase in weekly deaths. Worldometer recorded 15 deaths in the country, a 36.36 percent increase compared to the previous day.
Saudi Arabia followed in second place, with a 100 percent increase in deaths compared to the previous week. Daily death figures in the country decreased by 20 percent compared to the previous day, recording five deaths.
Furthermore, deaths in Lebanon increased by 28.57 percent, deaths in Indonesia increased by 26.32 percent, and deaths in the Philippines increased by five percent.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the past seven days in Asia occurred in Japan, with 401 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 0.75 percent compared to the previous week. Following Japan, the Philippines recorded 63 deaths (up five percent), South Korea recorded 62 deaths (down 21.52 percent), Iran (Islamic Republic) recorded 52 deaths (down 29.73 percent), and Indonesia recorded 24 deaths (up 26.32 percent).
Total Covid-19 deaths in Asia over the past seven days were recorded at 661. This accounts for 18.36 percent of global Covid-19 deaths, totaling 3,600. The number of deaths in Asia decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation, which totaled 683 deaths.
