This week's Covid-19 statistics in Asia still depict a concerning situation compared to the previous week, due to the continued increase in the number of deaths. This week, 12 countries recorded an increase in deaths, while nine others recorded deaths but with smaller numbers.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Azerbaijan, Sri Lanka, Cyprus, Hong Kong, and Israel. The total deaths in these five countries for the week of December 18, 2022, amounted to 265, with a weekly growth exceeding 20 percent.
Azerbaijan recorded the highest increase in Covid-19 deaths in Asia, with weekly growth reaching 133.33 percent. In this country, Worldometer recorded seven deaths, a 40 percent increase compared to the previous day.
Sri Lanka follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, deaths in this country grew by 100 percent. The number of deaths in this country was reported as six. Daily statistics show a 20% increase in deaths compared to the previous day, which was five.
Next, deaths in Cyprus increased by 60%, deaths in Hong Kong increased by 35.17%, and Israel recorded 48 deaths (a 20% increase).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in Japan, with 1,575 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 19.41% compared to the previous week. Following Japan, South Korea reported the highest number with 324 deaths (down 10%), Taiwan with 219 deaths (up 14.0625%), Hong Kong with 196 deaths (up 35.17%), and Indonesia with 186 deaths (down 24.08%).
The total number of Covid-19 deaths in Asia over the past seven days was recorded at 2,948. This accounts for 28.62 percent of global deaths caused by the Covid-19 virus, totaling 10,301. The number of deaths in Asia increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation, which was 2,704.
