This week's Covid-19 statistics in Africa show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a reversal from the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, three countries still recorded an increase in deaths, while 14 others recorded deaths but in smaller numbers.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Mauritius, Botswana, Mauritania, Madagascar, and Malawi. The total deaths in these five countries as of Wednesday, August 3, 2022, amounted to 20, with weekly growth above 0 percent.
Mauritius ranks first, with a 300 percent increase in weekly deaths. Worldometer recorded four deaths in the country, an increase compared to the previous week's single death.
Next is Botswana, which recorded a 133.33 percent increase in deaths compared to the previous week. The country reported seven more deaths than the previous week's three. Mauritania recorded two deaths (a 100% increase), Madagascar one death (unchanged from the previous week), and Malawi six deaths (unchanged from the previous week).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Africa occurred in Tunisia with 64 deaths. Death reports in this country decreased by 35.35% compared to the previous week. Following Tunisia, South Africa reported 20 deaths (down 25.93%), Morocco 18 deaths (down 41.94%), Botswana seven deaths (up 133.33%), and Malawi six deaths (down 0%).
Total deaths in Africa over the past seven days totaled 130. This accounts for 0.99 percent of global deaths caused by the Covid-19 virus, which reached 13,142. The number of deaths in Africa decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 201 deaths.
