Tourism Gradually Recovers, Timor-Leste Contributes the Most Tourists to Indonesia

The tourism sector, hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, is gradually recovering. This is evident in the increasing number of foreign tourists per month.

Foreign tourist visits to Indonesia totaled 138,967 in July 2021. This figure is up 1.25% compared to the previous month, which recorded 137,247 visits.

The majority of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia in July 2021 came from Timor-Leste, with 76,760 visits, representing 55.17% of the total. This was followed by Malaysia with 45,000 visits (32.38%) and China with 3,150 visits (2.26%).

Other countries with significant numbers of visitors to Indonesia include the United States with 2,560 visits (1.84%) and Papua New Guinea with 2,190 visits (1.57%).

From January to July 2021, a total of 937,747 foreign tourists visited Indonesia. This represents a 71.42% decrease compared to the same period in the previous year, which saw 3,281,542 visits. Timor-Leste remained the dominant source country, with 483,920 visits. Other countries with the highest number of visitors were Malaysia (292,650), China (37,630), Papua New Guinea (16,560), and Singapore (14,130).
