This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas show a decline in death tolls in most countries, a reversal from the previous trend of continuous increases. Four countries reported an increase in deaths this week, while 11 others reported fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths were Honduras, Ecuador, El Salvador, Colombia, and Costa Rica. A total of 128 deaths were reported in these five countries as of Monday, September 5, 2022, representing a weekly growth rate above 0 percent.
Honduras recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in the Americas, with a weekly growth of 142.86 percent. Worldometer recorded 17 deaths in the country, up from seven the previous week.
Ecuador followed with a weekly growth in deaths of 93.33 percent. The country reported 29 deaths, compared to 15 the previous week.
Rounding out the top five, El Salvador saw a 50% increase in deaths, Colombia a 17.19% increase, and Costa Rica a 0% change.
Looking at the total number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was in the United States, with 2,003 deaths. This represents a 2.29% decrease compared to the previous week. Following the US, Brazil reported 879 deaths (down 8.53%), Peru 238 deaths (down 19.87%), Mexico 229 deaths (down 25.41%), and Canada 206 deaths (down 1.9%).
A total of 4,016 deaths were recorded in the Americas over the past seven days. This accounts for 33.08 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, totaling 12,139. The number of deaths in the Americas decreased compared to the previous seven-day period, which saw 4,351 deaths.
