Users frequently receive spam emails. The dark side is that a significant amount of spam is used to spread malware, which can compromise user security.
AwanPintar.id, an Indonesian cloud security engine, recorded the top five countries worldwide that sent the most spam emails to Indonesian users in the first half of 2023.
China was recorded as the country that launched the most spam email attacks on Indonesia, accounting for 31.26% of total spam attacks.
This was followed by North Macedonia and India, which sent spam at percentages of 20.47% and 18.15%, respectively.
Indonesia itself was also recorded as the fifth-largest sender of spam emails, accounting for 6.29% of spam sent to its own users.
It should be noted that AwanPintar.id stated that these domestic attacks could be carried out through compromised accounts or servers controlled from outside Indonesia.
"(The) most common threat in spam emails is phishing, a cybercrime that targets victims' sensitive information or data through email, social media posts, or text messages," wrote AwanPintar.id in its report.
AwanPintar.id stated that phishing perpetrators usually pose as authorized parties or institutions.
Then, the perpetrators insert links into the disseminated narrative, leading victims to click on these links.
"The data targeted by phishing includes personal data (name, age, address), account data (username and password), and financial data (credit card or bank account information)," said AwanPintar.id.
AwanPintar.id collects this data based on sensors spread throughout Indonesia. These attacks not only identify the origin of the attack but also determine the type of attack carried out.
