The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 2.51 million cases by Monday, January 9, 2023. The United States recorded the highest number of Omicron cases, with weekly growth reaching 0.97 percent. GISAID recorded 2.08 million Omicron cases in the US. Daily cases in this region increased by 0.05 percent compared to the previous day.
Next is Brazil, which recorded 3.23 percent more Omicron cases compared to the previous week. Daily Omicron cases in the country increased by 0.14 percent compared to the previous day.
Following this are Italy with 71,373 Omicron cases (up 1.14%), the Netherlands with 63,627 Omicron cases (up 0.39%), and Ireland with 49,815 Omicron cases (up 0.78% compared to the previous week).
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases recorded to date is 32,172, a 0.85 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges all parties to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
