The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that 69.62% of the Indonesian population had health insurance in 2021, up 1.26 percentage points from 2020.
The trend of the population having health insurance has been increasing since 2017. 59.41% of the population had health insurance in 2017. This percentage increased to 64.1% in 2018 and continued to increase to 65.88% in 2019.
Then, during the pandemic, it experienced an increase along with the increasing public awareness of health. The percentage of the population with health insurance increased by 3.41 percentage points to 69.29% in 2020, and 68.36% in 2021.
Health insurance is a guarantee organized with the aim of ensuring that participants receive health maintenance benefits. Furthermore, the community receives protection in fulfilling basic health needs in accordance with Law No. 40 of 2004 concerning the National Social Security System.
Meanwhile, the government will increase the payment rate of the Health Social Security Agency (BPJS Kesehatan) to hospitals. This rate includes the BPJS Kesehatan payment method to hospitals through a per-episode health service package system or Indonesian Case Based Group (INA CBGs).
The government has decided to increase the compensation rate to BPJS partner hospitals by 30% as of December 2022. The rate increase will also be followed by an increase in benefits with the addition of several covered diseases. The benefits to be added are screenings for several diseases.
"We are adding preventive benefits for 14 diseases," said the Head of the Communication and Public Service Bureau of the Ministry of Health, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, as reported by *Katadata.co.id*, Wednesday (30/11).
