The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 5.89 million cases by Tuesday, February 21, 2023. Jordan recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with weekly growth reaching 34.91 percent. GISAID recorded 228 new Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region increased by 1.33 percent compared to the previous day.
Next is China (PRC), which recorded an 18.48 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous week. Daily Omicron cases in the country increased by 1.45 percent compared to the previous day.
Furthermore, Omicron cases in Uganda increased by 5.64 percent to 543 cases compared to the previous week, Brazil saw an increase of 100,040 Omicron cases (up 5.08%), and Brunei Darussalam recorded 4,499 additional Omicron cases (up 3.9%).
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases reached 34,249, a 0.11 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
