The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) notes that the proportion of elderly workers in Indonesia reached 52.55% of the total workforce in 2022. This figure increased by 3.09 percentage points year-on-year (yoy) from 49.46% the previous year.
"Several reasons underlie elderly workers continuing to work, one of which is economic inability," wrote BPS in its report.
Based on region, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) is the province with the highest national percentage of working elderly people, reaching 66.53% in 2022.
"This figure shows that more than 60% of the elderly population in NTT is in the labor market," said BPS.
BPS stated that the high number of elderly workers in NTT is due to a decrease of 1.73% yoy in the percentage of households that have or receive old-age security.
Next, followed by Papua with a proportion of working elderly people of 61.70% and Lampung at 58.05%.
The province with the lowest national percentage of elderly workers is DKI Jakarta, at only 38.32% last year.
"The low number of working elderly people in DKI Jakarta is inseparable from the many social institutions for the elderly. Therefore, the elderly do not have the urgency to return to work," explained BPS.
