The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) conducted whole genome sequencing on 7,854 coronavirus (COVID-19) sequences from January 1 to October 17, 2021. Of these, 4,021 sequences were the Delta variant (B.1.617.2).
This variant, originating from India, was most prevalent on the island of Java, with 2,164 sequences. This accounts for 53.8% of the total national Delta variant count.
A total of 623 sequences (15.5%) of the Delta variant were found in Kalimantan. Furthermore, 575 sequences (14.3%) of the Delta variant were detected in Sumatra.
The Delta variant was detected in Sulawesi, and Nusa Tenggara and Bali, with 276 sequences (6.9%) and 219 sequences (5.5%) respectively. Then, there were 164 sequences (4.1%) of the Delta variant found in Papua and Maluku.
Kemenkes also detected 68 cases of the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7) and 22 cases of the Beta variant (B.1.351) of COVID-19 during the same period.
These three coronavirus variants have higher transmission rates. Therefore, the public needs to be vigilant against the transmission of these three coronavirus variants.
To prevent the spread of coronavirus, the public is urged to diligently implement the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands with soap. In addition, the public is also encouraged to avoid crowds and reduce mobility.
