The average monthly household consumption expenditure in Indonesia has steadily increased over the past five years.
According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), in 2021, the average Indonesian spent Rp1.26 million per month on consumption.
This figure represents an increase of approximately Rp38,905, or 3.17%, compared to 2020, where the average was Rp1.22 million per month.
Monthly consumption expenditure in 2021 even increased by 22% compared to 2017, which averaged Rp1.03 million per month.
According to the BPS, this indicates a rise in the cost of living during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A breakdown of expenditure shows that in 2021, the average Indonesian spent Rp622,800 per month on food and Rp641,700 on non-food items.
Based on residence, the average consumption expenditure for urban residents was Rp1.48 million per month, significantly higher than the Rp971,400 average for rural residents.
The BPS also notes that household consumption expenditure contributed significantly to the national economy, accounting for 54.42% in 2021.
