A report from the Indonesian Ministry of Health's Health Research and Development Agency (Balitbangkes) shows that 10,055 Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant Covid-19 case sequences were detected until April 11, 2022. This mutation, categorized as a variant of concern (VoC), has spread across 32 provinces in Indonesia.
Jakarta remains the province with the highest number of Omicron variant Covid-19 sequences, with 5,818 sequences. This accounts for 57.86% of the total national Omicron variant Covid-19 sequences.
The next highest number of Omicron variant Covid-19 sequences was found in West Java with 1,400 sequences, followed by Banten with 619 sequences.
Furthermore, Central Java and East Java have detected 488 and 416 Omicron variant sequences, respectively.
Bali, Yogyakarta, and North Sulawesi have also detected 134, 104, and 90 Omicron variant sequences, respectively. Meanwhile, Papua and East Nusa Tenggara detected 84 and 74 sequences, respectively.
In addition to the Omicron variant, other coronavirus variants have been detected in Indonesia, such as the Beta (B.1.351), Alpha (B.1.17), and Delta (B.1.617.2) variants, which are also categorized as VoCs. The total number of sequences detected domestically for these variants are 22, 83, and 8,671, respectively.
With the emergence of various coronavirus variants, the public is urged to consistently and diligently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands with soap. Vaccination is also crucial to reduce morbidity and mortality from Covid-19 infection.
