False or hoax information can lead readers to make incorrect decisions or take wrong actions. However, most Indonesians seem to still hesitate in distinguishing between fake news and real news.

This is evident from a survey report resulting from a collaboration between the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) and the Katadata Insight Center (KIC), titled *Digital Literacy Status in Indonesia 2022*.

According to the report, 45% of respondents felt uncertain about their ability to identify hoax news.

Furthermore, 20% of respondents felt unsure, and 3% were very unsure of their ability to recognize fake news. On the other hand, 25% of respondents were confident in their ability to distinguish hoax news, while only 7% were very confident.

“Most respondents remain hesitant about their ability to identify hoaxes,” stated the Kominfo Ministry team in their report.

The report also shows that the majority of respondents consider the spread of hoax news a serious problem (71%), while the remainder (29%) consider this issue less important.

The Ministry of Communication and Informatics and KIC conducted this survey on 10,000 internet users aged 13-70 years, spread across 34 provinces and 514 regencies/cities in Indonesia.

The survey was conducted from August to September 2022 through face-to-face interviews. Sampling was done using a multistage random sampling method, with a margin of error of approximately 0.98% and a 95% confidence interval.

Respondents had diverse backgrounds, including housewives, entrepreneurs, employees, students, farmers, and others. The complete report on this survey can be accessed and downloaded via the link: https://survei.literasidigital.id/.
