The Indonesian Ministry of Health found 211 cases of new coronavirus variants from a total of 2,242 sequences up to June 20, 2021. The majority of these were the Delta variant (B.1.617.2), totaling 160 cases.
The Indian variant was most prevalent in Central Java, with 80 cases. Fifty-seven Delta variant cases were found in Jakarta. Ten Delta variant cases were detected in East Java.
Three Delta variant cases each were found in Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, and South Sumatra. Two Delta variant cases were detected in Banten. One Delta variant case each was found in West Java and Gorontalo.
Forty-five cases of the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7) from the UK were detected in Indonesia. Six cases of the Beta variant (B.1.351) from South Africa were found domestically.
The Alpha variant has spread to 10 provinces, mostly in Jakarta. The Beta variant affected three provinces: Jakarta, East Java, and Bali.
These three new coronavirus variants have a higher transmission rate. This contributed to the surge in national cases at the end of June 2021.
Therefore, the public is urged to diligently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands with soap. Furthermore, the public is encouraged to avoid crowds and reduce mobility.
