Indonesia's 10 Most Polluted Areas: Where Does Jakarta Rank? (Monday, October 2nd, 2023)

Air quality in Central Kalimantan this morning is the worst in Indonesia. According to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK)'s Air Pollutant Standard Index (ISPU) page on Monday, October 2nd, 2023, at 7:00 AM WIB, the air quality index in Central Kalimantan was 1057.

According to the KLHK's Directorate of Air Pollution Control, the ISPU is a unitless number used to describe the ambient air quality at a specific location, based on its impact on human health, aesthetics, and other living things.

The ISPU calculation is based on measurements of seven air pollutant parameters: PM10, PM2.5, NO2, SO2, CO, O3, and HC. Measurements of these air pollutant parameters are taken at 72 stations across various regions.

Based on the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 14 of 2020 concerning the Air Pollutant Standard Index, an ISPU in the range of 0-50 indicates good air quality, 51-100 indicates moderate air quality, and 101-200 indicates unhealthy air quality that is harmful to humans, animals, and plants.

Next, very unhealthy air quality in the range of 201-300 can increase health risks for sensitive groups. Meanwhile, hazardous air quality in the range of over 300 can seriously harm health and requires immediate action.

Following Central Kalimantan, South Sumatra has the second-worst air quality in Indonesia with an air quality index of 329. In third place is South Kalimantan with an air quality index of 158.

This means that Central Kalimantan and South Sumatra have hazardous air quality.
