Moldova, Belarus, Lithuania, Russia, and the Czech Republic were recorded as the five countries with the highest per capita alcohol consumption in the world in 2015. On average, residents in these countries, aged 15 and over, consumed 15.8 liters of alcohol (pure alcohol equivalent) per year. Moldova had the highest consumption, with an average of 17.4 liters per person.
This consumption rate, calculated by the World Health Organization (WHO), is based on official national statistics, referring to production, import, export, sales, and alcohol tax data. Some data also accounts for alcohol consumption not recorded through tax mechanisms or official distribution channels according to government regulations.
By region, the European population recorded the highest alcohol consumption worldwide. The lowest alcohol consumption was recorded in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
