The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that the hotel occupancy rate (TPK) for star-rated hotels in Indonesia reached 49.03% in May 2023. This figure surged 7.65 points compared to the previous month (month-on-month/mom), which was 41.37%.
In the previous month, the TPK for star-rated hotels in Indonesia had dropped amid the Ramadan and Idul Fitri holidays. However, the latest data shows an increase in occupancy for star-rated hotels domestically.
Despite this, the TPK for star-rated hotels in May 2023 decreased by 0.82 points compared to the previous year (year-on-year/yoy). In May 2022, the TPK for star-rated hotels in Indonesia was 49.85%.
The TPK for star-rated hotels in May 2023 was still higher than in May 2021, which was 31.97%. Similarly, at the beginning of the pandemic, the TPK for star-rated hotels in Indonesia in the fifth month of this year was higher than in May 2020, which was only 14.45%.
The decline in the TPK for star-rated hotels in Indonesia due to the Covid-19 pandemic led the government to implement social restriction policies. This then affected the weakening Indonesian economy, including the domestic tourism sector.
By province, Yogyakarta Special Region had the highest national TPK for star-rated hotels in May 2023, reaching 60.54%. This was followed by East Kalimantan at 58.12% and South Sumatra at 57.29%, while the lowest TPK for star-rated hotels was recorded in Aceh at 30.18%.
Similar to star-rated hotels, the TPK for non-star-rated hotels in May 2023, which reached 24.24%, increased by 2.37 points compared to April 2023. However, compared to the previous year, the TPK for non-star-rated hotels decreased by 0.51 points compared to May 2022.
The highest TPK for non-star-rated hotels in May 2023 was in DKI Jakarta at 40.24%, followed by North Kalimantan at 35.07% and Riau Islands at 32.52%, while the lowest TPK for non-star-rated hotels was in Banten at only 16.93%.
