The 2022 Mandalika MotoGP will be held from March 18-20, 2022 in Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). This motorcycle racing event is hoped to boost Indonesia's tourism industry, particularly in NTB, amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) on the Hotel Occupancy Rate (HOR) for star-rated hotels in NTB in January 2022, it stood at 31.35%. This figure shows an increase of 11.18 percentage points compared to the January 2021 HOR of 20.17% (year-on-year/yoy).
However, the HOR for star-rated hotels in NTB in January 2022 decreased month-to-month (m-to-m). In December 2021, the NTB HOR was recorded at 39.84%.
The HOR for star-rated hotels in NTB fluctuated throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. At the beginning of the pandemic, in March 2020, the NTB HOR dropped to 19.07%, then reached its lowest point in April 2020 at 6.23%.
Subsequently, the HOR in NTB gradually increased, reaching 43.9% in December 2020, but plummeted again when Covid-19 cases surged during July-August 2021.
Then, in September 2021, the HOR began to recover as Covid-19 cases decreased and community activities were gradually relaxed. The HOR peaked in November 2021 at 47.16%.
The government, along with all stakeholders, continues to strive to prepare various accommodations, including lodging, ahead of the international Mandalika MotoGP event.
The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Parekraf) stated that accommodations in and around the Mandalika area were fully booked during the MotoGP race on March 18-20, 2022. However, there are still 6,000 accommodation units around Lombok Island and 2,500 units around Gili.
“For tourists who are still worried about the lack of rooms or transportation, we are on progress and ready for implementation,” said Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, quoted from the official Kemenparekraf website (16/3/2022).
