A report by market and consumer data company Statista, titled *Statista Consumer Insights*, shows that Indonesia is the world's largest user of electronic cigarettes, or vapes. A recorded 25% of Indonesian respondents stated that they use pen-shaped e-cigarettes at least occasionally.
“In Indonesia, 1 in 4 people surveyed by *Statista Consumer Insights* said they have used vapes at least occasionally,” Statista said, as quoted from its website on Wednesday (31/5/2023).
Meanwhile, in Europe, Statista's report indicates that vaping is quite popular in Switzerland (15% of respondents) and the UK (13%). Vape use in the United States and Canada is also quite popular, although lower than in Indonesia, as shown in the chart above.
On the other hand, the Statista report shows that vaping is less popular in Brazil, where only 6% of respondents said they use vapes at least occasionally. Even fewer in Morocco, with only 2% of respondents giving the same answer.
The survey was conducted online with approximately 1,000-9,500 respondents aged 18-64 from several countries, including Indonesia. The survey was conducted between January and March 2023.
Vaping has become increasingly popular in recent years, particularly with the emergence of new brands like Elf Bar.
According to Statista, vaping is generally considered less harmful than smoking tobacco and is often used as a tool to help quit smoking. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) warns that it is too early to say what the long-term effects of e-cigarette use or exposure to them might be.
“Disposable e-cigarettes are also criticized for targeting young consumers through their marketing campaigns and enticing them to smoke. Although vapes don't burn tobacco, they often still contain nicotine, which is highly addictive,” Statista stated.
