The 2022 Global Terrorism Index (GTI) report indicates that 7,142 people died as a result of terrorist attacks in 2021. This figure represents a 1.1% decrease from the previous year.
However, terrorist attacks increased by 17% to 5,226 in 2021 compared to the previous year. The majority of these terrorist acts occurred in the Sahel region (Africa) and Afghanistan.
For example, a suicide bombing at Kabul International Airport in Afghanistan on August 26, 2021, was the deadliest terrorist attack in the world last year. This attack resulted in 170 deaths and 200 injuries. The Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) claimed responsibility for this deadly attack.
The next deadliest terrorist attack occurred in Yagha Province, Burkina Faso, on June 5, 2021. Armed men killed at least 160 people and injured 40 others in the village of Solhen in the Sahel region of Africa.
Thirdly, another deadly terrorist attack took place in Tahoua, Niger, on March 21, 2021. Armed groups killed at least 137 civilians in three regions. Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA) claimed responsibility for this attack.
Fourthly, a group of armed men killed at least 100 civilians in Kandahar, Afghanistan, on July 22, 2021. The Taliban claimed responsibility for this violence.
Fifthly, a series of three bomb attacks in Kabul, Afghanistan, on May 8, 2021, killed at least 86 civilians, mostly students. Another 150 people were injured at a secondary school in Kabul Province. No group claimed responsibility for these bombings.
Sixthly, an armed attack in the Sahel region of Burkina Faso on August 18, 2021, killed 80 people: 59 civilians, 15 security forces, and 6 pro-government militia members. Nineteen others were injured.
Furthermore, a motorbike-borne armed attack in Tillaberi, Niger, on January 2, 2021, resulted in the deaths of approximately 70 civilians. According to local media reports, Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) was responsible for this incident.
Eighthly, armed men killed at least 49 police officers and 4 civilians at a police post in the Sahel region of Burkina Faso in November 2021. JNIM claimed responsibility for this attack.
Ninthly, a suicide bombing during Friday prayers at a Shia mosque in Kunduz Province, Afghanistan, in 2021, killed at least 50 civilians and injured 140 others. The Islamic State Khorasan Province claimed responsibility.
Finally, four suicide bombers attacked a Shia mosque in Kandahar, Afghanistan, on October 15, 2021. The attack resulted in 47 deaths and at least 80 injuries. The Islamic State Khorasan Province claimed responsibility for this attack.
