According to the Henley Passport Index released by Henley & Partners, Japan has the world's strongest passport. Holders of a Japanese passport could visit 193 countries visa-free during the first quarter of 2023.
Singapore and South Korea are tied for second place. Citizens possessing passports from either country have visa-free access to 192 countries.
Germany and Spain are tied for third place, with visa-free access to 190 countries. This is followed by Finland, Italy, and Luxembourg, each with visa-free access to 189 countries.
Next are Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Sweden, whose passports offer visa-free access to 188 countries.
Indonesia's passport ranks 75th, with visa-free access to 71 countries, a strength equal to that of a Zambian passport.
With visa-free access, passport holders do not need to process or pay for a visa before departure. Visas can be obtained on arrival or by using an electronic travel authorization (ETA).
The Henley Passport Index compiles a list of the strength of countries' passports based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), supplemented by research from Henley & Partners' Research Department.
The index covers 199 different passports and 227 travel destinations. This index report is updated quarterly.
