The 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (IHS) report released by the Ministry of Health reveals an increase in the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) among the population over 15 years of age, based on blood sugar level measurements.
The 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) recorded an Indonesian diabetes prevalence of 10.9%. This has now risen to 11.7% in 2023.
The Ministry of Health explains that among the productive age group (18-59 years) and the elderly (60 years and older), there is a disparity between respondents diagnosed with diabetes and those undergoing treatment or follow-up visits to healthcare facilities.
"The proportion of respondents regularly taking medication and making follow-up visits to healthcare facilities is lower than the proportion of respondents diagnosed with diabetes," the Ministry of Health wrote in its report, quoted on Friday (5/7/2024).

Specifically, in the 18-59 age group, 1.6% of respondents were diagnosed with diabetes. However, only 1.46% underwent treatment; 1.3% received treatment as instructed; and 0.9% made follow-up visits.
Furthermore, in the over-60 age group, 6.5% were diagnosed. Only 6.06% underwent treatment; 5.46% received treatment as instructed; and 4.12% made follow-up visits.
In more advanced stages, diabetes impacts disability incidence. Diabetes is a contributing factor to disability experienced by 10.5% of respondents over 15 years of age.
