Most citizens of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) appear to be quite active in sports. This is reflected in the ASEAN Survey on Sports Participation 2021.
"The majority, or 65%, of the surveyed population across ASEAN is considered physically active, according to WHO recommended standards," said the ASEAN Secretariat in the report.
However, the physically active ASEAN population is largely from the adult age group (18 years and older), with a proportion of 68%. Meanwhile, only 35% of young people (under 18 years old) are actively involved in sports.
Generally, the favorite sporting activity of ASEAN citizens is walking, which is commonly done by 51% of respondents.
Jogging, home workouts, badminton, football, and other physical activities are only performed by less than 50% of respondents.
This survey was conducted by the ASEAN Secretariat during the period of May-September 2021 using online and face-to-face interview methods.
The survey involved approximately 15,000 respondents spread across all ASEAN member states, namely Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, and Brunei Darussalam.
