This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. Nine countries recorded increased deaths this week, while seven others saw a decrease in the number of deaths.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are El Salvador, Ecuador, Honduras, Trinidad and Tobago, and Argentina. A total of 51 deaths were recorded in these five countries by Friday, June 24, 2022, representing a weekly growth exceeding 33.33 percent.
El Salvador ranks first, with a 200 percent weekly increase in deaths. Worldometer recorded three deaths in the country, up from one the previous week.
Ecuador follows with a 100 percent weekly increase in deaths. The country reported 12 deaths, compared to six the previous week.
Rounding out the top five are Honduras with two deaths (up 100%), Trinidad and Tobago with 22 deaths (up 37.5%), and Argentina with 12 deaths (up 33.33%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days occurred in the United States, with 1,522 deaths. This represents a 14.54% decrease compared to the previous week. Brazil follows with 919 deaths (down 11.89%), Mexico with 216 deaths (unchanged from the previous week), Canada with 167 deaths (down 29.24%), and Chile with 161 deaths (up 19.26%).
A total of 3,279 deaths were recorded in the Americas over the past seven days. This accounts for 39.78 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, totaling 8,243. The number of deaths in the Americas decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 3,711 deaths.
