This week's Covid-19 statistics in Africa show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a reversal from the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, three countries still recorded an increase in deaths, while nine others recorded deaths but in smaller numbers.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Tunisia, South Africa, Botswana, Morocco, and Mauritius. The total deaths in these five countries as of Saturday, September 17, 2022, amounted to 33, with weekly growth above 0 percent.
Tunisia ranks first, with a 25 percent weekly increase in deaths. Worldometer recorded five deaths in this country, an increase compared to the previous week's four deaths.
South Africa follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, deaths in this country grew by 13.33 percent. The number of deaths reported was 17, compared to 15 the previous week.
Rounding out the top five are Botswana with nine deaths (up 12.5%), Morocco with one death (unchanged from the previous week), and Mauritius with one death (also unchanged).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Africa occurred in South Africa with 17 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 13.33% compared to the previous week. Following this, Botswana reported nine deaths (up 12.5%), Tunisia reported five deaths (up 25%), Morocco reported one death (down 0%), and Mauritius reported one death (unchanged).
Total Covid-19 deaths in Africa over the past seven days were recorded at 36. This accounts for 0.33 percent of global Covid-19 deaths, which totaled 10,983. The number of deaths in Africa is down compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 51 deaths.
