The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 686,620 cases by Friday, January 28, 2022. Egypt recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with weekly growth reaching 2,800 percent. GISAID recorded 29 new Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region increased by 11.54 percent compared to the previous day.
Chile follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, the increase in Omicron cases in this country grew by 412.97 percent. The daily increase in Omicron cases in this country rose by 404.79 percent compared to the previous day, which recorded 376 cases.
Next is Bonaire with 169 additional Omicron cases (up 382.86%), Argentina with 905 additional Omicron cases (up 359.39%), and Sint Maarten with 237 additional Omicron cases (up 295%).
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases reached 1,818, an increase of 3.59 percent compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges all parties to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
