This week's Covid-19 statistics in Asia show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a reversal from the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, two countries recorded an increase in deaths, while eight others recorded fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Lebanon, Afghanistan, Iran (Islamic Republic), Saudi Arabia, and Israel. The total number of deaths in these five countries for the week ending January 29, 2023, was 79, with a weekly growth rate above -3.33 percent.
Lebanon ranks first, with a weekly increase in deaths of 36.36 percent. Worldometer recorded 15 deaths in the country, an increase from the 11 reported the previous week.
Afghanistan follows, with a weekly growth in deaths reaching 20 percent. Daily death figures in the country increased by 9.09% compared to the previous day, which recorded 11 deaths.
Next is Iran (Islamic Republic) with 10 deaths (unchanged from the previous week), Saudi Arabia with a 0% decrease in deaths, and Israel with a 3.33% decrease.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in Japan, with 2,345 deaths. Death reports in this country decreased by 15.62% compared to the previous week. Following Japan, the highest numbers were recorded in South Korea with 176 deaths (down 35.53%), the Philippines with 77 deaths (down 37.4%), Israel with 29 deaths (down 3.33%), and Indonesia with 25 deaths (down 52.83%).
Total deaths in Asia over the past seven days were recorded at 2,729. This accounts for 34.87 percent of global deaths caused by the Covid-19 virus, totaling 7,826. The number of deaths in Asia decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 3,352 deaths.
