What is the annual cigarette consumption of the Indonesian population?

A report from the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC) of the Indonesian Ministry of Finance shows that Indonesian cigarette consumption amounted to 322 billion sticks in 2020. This figure represents a 9.7% decrease compared to the previous year, which reached 356.5 billion sticks.

According to the agency, cigarette consumption decreased due to rising cigarette prices in 2020. In addition, economic contraction also affected national cigarette consumption throughout last year.

The trend shows that Indonesian cigarette consumption has been declining, although it saw a sharp increase in 2019. Recorded cigarette consumption in 2019 increased by 7.4% compared to the previous year, which amounted to 331.9 billion sticks.

Over the past six years, the lowest cigarette consumption was recorded in 2018, while the highest was in 2019.

The Ministry of Finance has agreed to increase the average excise tax on cigarettes by 12% next year. This increase is smaller than the increases in the previous two years: 12.5% in 2020 and 23% in 2019.
