The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 2.05 million cases by Monday, January 16, 2023. The United Kingdom ranks first, with weekly Omicron cases growing by 0.65 percent. GISAID recorded 1.38 million Omicron cases in the UK, an increase from 1.37 million the previous week.
Japan follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, the number of Omicron cases in the country grew by 3.77 percent. Daily Omicron case numbers increased by 0.22 percent compared to the previous day, reaching 337,380.
Next is Austria with 143,190 Omicron cases (up 1.96%), Australia with 127,300 Omicron cases (up 1.16%), and Indonesia with 33,187 Omicron cases (up 3.15%).
As of today, the number of Omicron cases in Indonesia stands at 33,187, a 1.74 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since its initial detection, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is advised to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
