Djarum was the biggest spender on television advertising in 2016. According to Adstensity.com data, this Kudus, Central Java-based tobacco company spent Rp 1.9 trillion advertising its products on television. This figure represents a 56 percent increase from the previous year's Rp 1.2 trillion and was the largest among all brands. Owned by the Hartono brothers, one of Indonesia's wealthiest families, the company also topped the list of television advertising spenders in 2015.
Three major cigarette companies dominated the list of top advertisers in 2016. Despite facing numerous pressures, such as restrictions on smoking in public places, increased excise taxes, health warnings on packaging, and advertising restrictions, cigarette manufacturers again spent significant sums on television advertising.
Walls, with Rp 1.63 trillion in spending, was the second-largest advertiser in 2016, having not even been in the top ten the previous year. In third place, Pepsodent recorded Rp 1.34 trillion in television advertising spending, a 56 percent jump from the previous year's Rp 857 billion.
