The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 3.63 million cases by Monday, August 1, 2022. Taiwan ranks first, with a weekly increase in Omicron cases growing by 26.88 percent. GISAID recorded 203 new Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region increased by 4.64 percent compared to the previous day.
Following Taiwan is Japan, in second place. Compared to the previous week, Omicron cases in Japan increased by 22.81 percent. The number of new Omicron cases reported in Japan was 153,280. Daily statistics show a 0.09 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day, which recorded 153,140 cases.
Next, new Omicron cases in Ukraine increased by 19.87 percent to 181 cases compared to the previous week; Israel saw an increase of 81,666 Omicron cases (up 7.78 percent); and Vietnam reported 2,700 new Omicron cases (up 7.1 percent).
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, up to yesterday's data, there were 16,997 new Omicron cases, a 2.26 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
