The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that the number of domestic tourist trips in August 2023 reached 592,700. This figure is down 28.25% compared to July 2023, which reached 826,150 trips.
However, August 2023's travel numbers were 68.43% higher year-on-year (yoy) compared to August 2022, which recorded only 351,880 trips.
Since the beginning of 2023, the highest number of domestic tourist trips was recorded in July 2023. The second highest was in January 2023, reaching 660,220 trips.
Based on the travel routes, the highest number of trips originated from airports, reaching 444,460 in August 2023. Seaports accounted for 95,150 trips, followed by land borders with 36,460 trips.
BPS also collected data on trips from non-immigration routes, reaching 16,610 trips in August 2023. This preliminary data was processed by BPS from the Directorate General of Immigration of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights and mobile positioning data (MPD).
Separately, Marketeers reported that 93% of Indonesian respondents, who are also tourists, intend to travel at least the same amount as they did in the past year. 65% of Indonesian respondents even intend to travel significantly more than before.
This data comes from SiteMinder's Changing Traveller Report 2023, published by SiteMinders, an open hotel sales platform. The research surveyed 10,000 people from 12 countries, including Indonesia.
On the other hand, the number of people planning to travel abroad has doubled, from 10% last year to 25% this year.
SiteMinder's Regional Vice President for Asia Pacific, Bradley Haines, said the research shows the progress of Indonesia's travel sector and the important role played by accommodation providers.
“Unlike in previous years, we see a stronger intention from Indonesian tourists to travel abroad and allocate funds for it, even amidst inflationary pressures,” said Haines in a statement written by Marketeers on Tuesday (3/10/2023).
