This week's COVID-19 statistics in Asia show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a reversal from the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, 11 countries still recorded an increase in deaths, while 14 others recorded fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Hong Kong, South Korea, Turkey, Macau, and Singapore. A total of 156 deaths were recorded in these five countries as of Saturday, July 16, 2022, representing weekly growth exceeding 50 percent.
Hong Kong ranks first, with a 150 percent increase in weekly deaths. Worldometer recorded 20 deaths in the country, up from eight the previous week.
South Korea follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, deaths in the country increased by 106 percent. Yesterday's daily death toll in the country was 103. Deaths in Turkey increased by 71.43%, deaths in Macau increased by 50%, and Singapore recorded 18 deaths (a 50% increase).
Looking at the total number of reported deaths, Taiwan recorded the highest number of deaths in the past seven days in Asia, with 589 deaths. This represents a 14.26% decrease compared to the previous week. Following Taiwan, India recorded 261 deaths (up 19.72%), Thailand recorded 157 deaths (up 17.16%), Japan recorded 131 deaths (up 36.46%), and South Korea recorded 103 deaths (up 106%).
A total of 1,573 deaths were recorded in Asia over the past seven days. This accounts for 14.28 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, which totaled 11,019. The number of deaths in Asia decreased compared to the previous seven-day period, which recorded 1,609 deaths.
