This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. Twelve countries recorded increased deaths this week, while five others saw a decrease in the number of deaths.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Honduras, Paraguay, Argentina, Suriname, and Panama. A total of 57 deaths were recorded in these five countries as of Friday, July 22, 2022, representing a weekly growth exceeding 50 percent.
Honduras recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in the Americas, with weekly growth reaching 600 percent. Worldometer recorded seven deaths in the country, compared to only one the previous week.
Paraguay follows with a weekly increase in deaths of 116.67 percent. Thirteen deaths were reported, compared to six the previous week.
Rounding out the top five, Argentina saw a 113.33% increase in deaths, Suriname recorded two deaths (a 100% increase), and Panama recorded three deaths (a 50% increase).
Looking at the total number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days occurred in the United States, with 1,976 deaths. This represents a 7.23% decrease compared to the previous week. Following the US, Brazil recorded 1,726 deaths (a 0.35% increase), Mexico recorded 468 deaths (a 40.54% increase), Chile recorded 262 deaths (a 10.08% increase), and Peru recorded 163 deaths (a 32.52% increase).
A total of 4,935 deaths were recorded in the Americas over the past seven days. This accounts for 39.34 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, totaling 12,544. The number of deaths in the Americas decreased compared to the previous seven-day period, which recorded 4,993 deaths.
