Percentage-wise, the five countries with the highest increase in deaths were Ecuador, Chile, Guyana, El Salvador, and Guatemala. The total deaths in these five countries as of Thursday, February 17, 2022, were 1,052, with a weekly growth rate exceeding 10.74 percent.
Ecuador recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in the Americas, with weekly growth reaching 134 percent. Worldometer recorded 234 deaths in the country, up from 100 the previous week.
Chile reported a 65.58 percent increase in deaths compared to the previous week, with 611 deaths reported, compared to 369 the previous week. Deaths in Guyana increased by 16.67%, El Salvador by 11.32%, and Guatemala by 10.74%.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was in the United States, with 13,937 deaths. This represents an 11.28% decrease compared to the previous week. Following the US, Brazil recorded 5,928 deaths (-2.99%), Mexico 3,213 deaths (+8.4%), Argentina 1,358 deaths (-15.65%), and Peru 1,310 deaths (-0.46%).
The total number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was 29,516. This accounts for 42.08 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, totaling 70,146. The number of deaths in the Americas decreased compared to the previous seven-day period, which totaled 31,764.
