According to data from the Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the average spending of Indonesian tourists (wisnus) in 2025 will reach IDR 2.44 million per trip.
Based on types of spending, wisnus' expenditure is still dominated by basic needs, namely accommodation (21.43%), food and beverages (19.68%), and transportation (18.34%).
BPS said, this distribution is reasonable because these three components generally always appear in every travel activity.
"In the short term, this pattern can quickly boost economic activity through job creation and increased demand for supporting services," explained BPS in its report.
However, the high concentration of spending on basic components indicates that the multiplier effect created is still weak locally.
BPS explained, this situation occurs if wisnus prefer to stay in star hotels rather than local accommodations, consume franchise-based food, or do not use local transportation.
The low proportion of spending on sectors with high local connectivity, such as entertainment services, tour packages, souvenirs, and regional creative products, results in wisnus' money not circulating long in the local economy.
"As a result, the increase in wisnus' mobility has not been fully converted into sustainable regional economic growth, as some economic value quickly flows out of the destination area," said BPS.
According to BPS, strengthening wisnus' role as a driver of economic growth is not enough through increasing the number of trips, but it needs to be directed towards changing the structure of spending.
