Sharia-compliant Accommodation in Indonesia Reaches Only 2.35% in 2024, Aceh Has the Most

Sharia hotels are accommodation providers offering room services, dining, entertainment, or other facilities operated in accordance with Sharia principles. This definition is stipulated in Fatwa Number 108/DSN–MUI/X/2016 issued by the National Sharia Council of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI).

To be categorized as a Sharia hotel, the hotel must obtain certification from MUI.

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that out of all accommodation service businesses in Indonesia in 2024, only 2.35% were Sharia-certified.

"The limited number of Sharia-certified accommodation service businesses indicates that the accommodation sector has not fully met the needs of halal tourism," BPS wrote in its report Statistics of Hotels and Other Accommodations in Indonesia 2025.

Although still minimal, 32 out of 38 provinces in the country have Sharia-certified accommodation businesses.

In 2024, Aceh became the province with the highest national percentage of Sharia accommodation service businesses, reaching 14.39%.

"In regions where the majority of the population is Muslim, the integration of Islamic principles needs to be implemented across all sectors, including tourism," BPS wrote.

The provinces that do not yet have such businesses are only West Sulawesi, North Maluku, Papua, South Papua, West Papua, and Highland Papua.

• South Kalimantan: 7.11%
• West Sumatra: 6.79%
• Lampung: 6.29%
• Riau: 5.85%
• Bengkulu: 5.07%
• South Sumatra: 4.58%
• Jambi: 4.13%
• North Kalimantan: 3.62%
• South Sulawesi: 3.6%
