The Number of Community Health Centers in Indonesia Increased in 2024

According to data from the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) compiled by Databoks, there were 10,268 puskesmas in Indonesia in 2024. This number increased by 88 units or 0.86% from the previous year.

"The increase in the number of puskesmas reflects the government's efforts to fulfill access to primary healthcare services," Kemenkes wrote in its report, Indonesia Health Profile 2024. 

Trend-wise, the number of puskesmas in the country has shown positive growth over the last decade. However, it briefly decreased in 2023 to 10,180 units. 

This decrease was caused by the abolition of several puskesmas due to their status being upgraded to Type D Hospitals, organizational restructuring, and the merger of two puskesmas.

The fulfillment of primary healthcare service needs can generally be assessed based on the ratio of puskesmas to sub-districts. 

In 2024, the ratio of puskesmas to sub-districts in Indonesia was 1.41. This indicates that, ideally, one sub-district should have one puskesmas. 

Kemenkes assesses that the national puskesmas ratio has been met. However, its distribution is not yet even. Notably, the province with the highest ratio is Bali, with 2.11 puskesmas per sub-district. Meanwhile, Southwest Papua has the lowest, with a ratio of only 0.79. 

"Community accessibility is influenced by various factors, including geographical conditions, area size, availability of basic facilities and infrastructure, socio-economic conditions, and the development of a region," Kemenkes wrote.
