Number of Maternal Deaths in Indonesia, 2019-2024

According to the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), there were 4,150 maternal deaths in Indonesia in 2024, a decrease compared to 2023, which saw 4,482 deaths.

Kemenkes defines maternal death as all deaths occurring during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, caused by their management, and not due to other factors such as accidents or incidental causes.

In 2024, the majority of maternal deaths were caused by non-obstetric complications during pregnancy.

The following are the details of the causes of maternal deaths in Indonesia in 2024:

• Non-obstetric complications: 1,351 cases
• Hypertension in pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum: 988 cases
• Obstetric hemorrhage: 955 cases
• Other obstetric complications: 506 cases
• Pregnancy-related infections: 209 cases
• Pregnancy with abortion complications: 94 cases
• Unanticipated management complications: 47 cases

According to Kemenkes, accelerating the reduction of maternal mortality is achieved by ensuring that every mother can access quality healthcare services, such as:

• Healthcare services for pregnant women;
• Assistance during childbirth by trained health personnel in healthcare facilities;
• Postpartum care for mothers and babies;
• Special care and referrals in case of complications; and
• Family planning services (KB), including postpartum family planning.
