According to a Kompas Research and Development survey, 54% of Indonesian respondents reported experiencing negative consequences from excessive cellphone screen time.

Of this group, 67.78% experienced physical problems such as red eyes, neck and back pain, physical inactivity, and disrupted eating patterns.

Furthermore, 23.33% reported psychological issues including stress, difficulty concentrating, anxiety, and insomnia. Meanwhile, 8.84% reported social withdrawal due to excessive cellphone use.

This survey involved 510 respondents from 54 cities across 38 provinces, selected randomly. Data collection was conducted from April 21-24, 2025, via telephone interviews.

According to Jati Ariati, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Psychology at Diponegoro University, excessive consumption of frivolous, fast, and superficial internet content can lead to a reluctance to think deeply.

This is often referred to as "brain rot", describing a state of cognitive overload resulting from meaningless digital activities, such as aimless social media scrolling.
