An Inventure survey reveals a variety of cost-cutting measures adopted by Indonesian middle-class young adults.
Of the total millennial and Gen Z respondents, 44% save money by cooking at home or packing lunches instead of eating out.
Furthermore, 35% opt for free exercise during Car Free Day (CFD) rather than paid gym memberships or fitness activities.
Another 29% save by watching free YouTube videos or television programs instead of subscribing to paid over-the-top (OTT) entertainment content like Netflix, Vidio, and Viu.
Other cost-cutting measures include thrifting or buying secondhand clothes (19%); subscribing to OTT services but limiting outings (10%); and attending free concerts or gigs (9%).
"Weak economic growth, income inequality, and rising prices of basic necessities have led the middle class to make significant adjustments to their spending habits," Inventure wrote in its report.
The Inventure survey involved 450 middle-class respondents, comprising 60% millennials and 40% Gen Z. The gender composition was 53% male and 47% female.
Data was collected through face-to-face interviews conducted in Jabodetabek, Semarang, Surabaya, Medan, and Makassar in September 2024.
