According to *The Straits Times*, 327 cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection were reported in Malaysia in 2024. This represents a 45% increase from the 225 cases reported in 2023.
This respiratory infection is known to be spreading in China. *The Straits Times* reports a recent surge in HMPV cases in several northern Chinese provinces, primarily affecting children under 14 years old.
The Malaysian Health Minister stated that HMPV is not a new disease. Individuals infected with the virus, first discovered in 2001, often experience symptoms similar to the common cold, although these can be more severe, potentially leading to bronchitis or pneumonia.
The Malaysian government urges its citizens to remain vigilant, as this respiratory infection continues to circulate within the community. They advise frequent handwashing with soap, mask-wearing, and covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
“The public is urged to proactively maintain their health and prevent transmission to others, especially in enclosed and crowded spaces,” the Malaysian Health Minister stated in a statement quoted by *The Straits Times* on Saturday, January 4, 2025. “This includes those planning to travel to high-risk countries,” they added.

According to the Indonesian government, no such cases have been reported in Indonesia. The spokesperson for the Indonesian Ministry of Health, Widyawati, reminds the public to take preventative measures, such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle, regular handwashing, and wearing masks in public places to reduce the risk of contracting infectious diseases.
“Currently, there are no reported cases of HMPV in Indonesia. Nevertheless, we urge the public to maintain their health by practicing clean and healthy living habits. This is important to strengthen the body's immunity and prevent the transmission of various viruses that could potentially threaten health,” said Widyawati in a statement on the Ministry of Health website on Saturday, January 4, 2025.
The Indonesian government is also continuously monitoring the development of the HMPV outbreak in China and other countries. Anticipatory measures are being taken through increased vigilance at points of entry into the country, including health quarantine surveillance for international travelers exhibiting influenza-like illness (ILI) symptoms.
“We will continue to coordinate with relevant parties to ensure effective preventative measures. These efforts are undertaken to prevent the virus from entering Indonesia,” said Widyawati.
